GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Firefighters battled a fire Wednesday afternoon in Gulfport. The blaze happened at a home near 36th Avenue and 20th Street.

Gulfport Battalion Chief Chris Henderson says the building is a one story house. Fire officials say the home suffered a lot of damage. Neighbors say there was a person inside the home when the fire started but that person was able to get out safely.

Billowing black smoke continued to fill the sky above the home long after the flames subsided as firefighters worked to put out any hot spots.

Authorities are still investigating to find out how the fire started.
