Progress in the Pass on schools and Boys and Girls Club

PASS CHRISTIAN, MS (WLOX) - "You walk through it, and you feel like you're in Disney World.  This whole campus is incredible," says Dr. Sue Matheson, Pass Christian Superintendent.

The campus will house Pass Christian elementary and middle schools, an early childcare center and a Boys and Girls Club.

"We've gotten phone calls from people all over the Coast wanting to move to Pass Christian, so their children can come to this wonderful facility," says Matheson.

Construction on the schools is expected to wrap up in May, so kids can move in this fall.  As for the Boys and Girls Club, they plan to start moving boxes in, in about two weeks.

"June 1st, the kids will be able to start. How exciting! The kids walked in the other day, walked around and looked and was like, 'Oh my God. This is for us,'" says Jackie Payne-McGee, Unit Director of the Pass Christan Boys and Girls Club.

The district says it could still use the community's help with landscaping. McGee says The Boys and Girls Club could also use a little extra help from the community.

"We need programming supplies as well as operating expenses for these kids to be able to enjoy such a great club. It'll be great. We accept all those things. Oh, I'm so excited," says Payne-McGee.

It's an exciting time as the Pass builds back for the future.

"For the community to come together as a whole to do it, it says a lot about Pass Christian," says Payne-McGee.

The Kaboom playground in Pass Christian marked the 132nd playground on the Gulf Coast. The Chrysler Foundation also sponsored the building of the playground.

Dick Empson is standing tall again - all 6 feet, four inches of him. And he’s back to thank Hancock Medical Center staff that got him back on two legs. “I told them that I was not coming back by to visit until I could walk in,” he said. He and his family have been vacationing in Pass Christian for 25 years. Last year, was one that won’t soon be forgotten. That's when he contracted vibrio. He lost his leg and nearly lost his life.
