Gulfport officers cleared in November shooting; jail suicide

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - A Harrison County grand jury on Monday found no wrongdoing in the shooting of Gayron Leroy Sanders by Gulfport Police. That shooting happened November 20th when police responded to reports that Sanders was threatening to commit suicide in the alley by Norwood Village Shopping Plaza.

Police said they were trying to talk with Sanders when he fired at them and the officers fired back. The grand jury investigation found that the actions of the officers were appropriate.

The grand jury also reviewed the death of James Allen this past Christmas Eve at the Harrison County jail and found no criminal conduct was involved. The 17-year-old was found hanging in his cell from a bed sheet.

The grand jury did recommend that surveillance equipment monitor all suicide watch holding cells at all times, as well as having specialized training for officers in this area.
