Forest fire threatens homes in northwest Harrison County

HARRISON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - A woods fire scorched two homes and threatened several others Thursday afternoon.

The fire started in Northwest Harrison County off of Highway 53 on Herman Ladner Road. Authorities say as much as 10 acres of timber, possibly more, were destroyed by the fire.

Harrison County Fire Marshal George Mixon said the fire was started by a man burning debris.

"A little before one this afternoon we got an emergency call 911 that a gentleman was burning some leaves. And the out of control burn really got out of control. When we got here, we had about a dozen mobile homes that were in danger of catching on fire from the out of control trash fire," Mixon told WLOX News.

Firefighters from four volunteer departments and the Mississippi Forestry Commission spent about an hour and a half bringing the blaze under control. No injuries were reported.
