Judge declares mistrial in Jackson mayor's trial

JACKSON, MS (WLOX) - The judge in the trial of Jackson Mayor Frank Melton has declared a mistrial. After five days of deliberations, the jury was hopelessly deadlocked.

Monday afternoon, jurors passed a note to the judge asking for direction on whether the defendant had to use a weapon to be guilty of one of the charges.

Melton and a former bodyguard were being tried on charges they violated the civil rights of the owner and tenant of a home Melton and his associates destroyed with a sledgehammer. Melton contended the place was a crack house.

We'll have more on the mistrial later today on WLOX News and WLOX.com.
