Seven escapees captured, one still at large

MARION COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - Seven of eight inmates who escaped from the Marion County jail Monday morning are now back in custody. The inmates used part of a bed to chip through a wall and escape.

Authorities say 21-year-old Derrick Rainey was arrested Monday night at a motel in south Hattiesburg. Rainey's girlfriend was also arrested and will be charged with helping him escape.

The search continued Tuesday for 19-year-old Eric Ball who had been in jail since June 12 on charges of breaking and entering and receiving stolen property.

Toney Clark was arrested around 10:30am Monday in Marion County. Three and a half hours later, John Smith and Brandon Silas were picked up about a mile away from where Clark was arrested. A K-9 unit from the Washington Parish Louisiana prison found them.

Three others, including convicted murder Mickah Lott, had made it all the way to Little Rock, Arkansas before being spotted. Arkansas State Police arrested Lott, David L. Johnson and Ricky Roberts after stopping the truck they were in about 2:30 Monday afternoon.

Marion County Sheriff Berkley Hall says the inmates apparently turned the bed piece into a tool, and had been working on chipping away at the wall for some time.

The Highway Patrol, the Mississippi Department of Corrections and local law enforcement officers were all participating in the search. Hall said helicopters, K-9 and other local law enforcement agencies were on the scene.

Anyone with information about the remaining escapee should call the Marion County Sheriff's Department at (601) 736-2711.
