PASS CHRISTIAN, MS (WLOX) - The city of Pass Christian hosted the first ever Mombo-que. It was a a state barbeque competition that hoped to attract vendors all over the country.

Smoke filled the air in Pass Christian. But there was no fire emergency, only good old barbeque.

"This is a lot of work. It's not for the faint of heart. Can I just tell you that," said Jackie Lentini.

Lentini and her team are from New Orleans.

The team of six is in South Mississippi for two reasons: to take home the top prize and to help recovery in the city of Pass Christian.

"The recovery effort is so important," said Lentini. "People getting back into their homes and back to their families, back to their lifestyles. That's why we're here."

Organizers say that's why many of the teams traveled to Pass Christian.

"These people will travel weekend-in and weekend-out hoping to win a state championship so that they can go to the world championship," said Skip Negrotto. "I hope that this becomes the first of many."

The teams competed in several categories. From chicken to ribs, team members get the opportunity to impress judges with their skills on the grill.

More importantly, this competition is bringing more people to the Pass.

"I think that bringing the people into the city to let them know that some businesses are back, get them driving around town and they can see that this is a beautiful place," said Negrotto.
