Mardi Gras brings economic boost

Over the next several days thousands of South Mississippi residents will take part in either a Mardi Gras ball or attend one of the several parades that will roll along our streets and highways. Attending a Mardi Gras parade with your family is a great way to enjoy some entertainment, without busting your budget. Besides entertainment, Mardi Gras brings in a lot of revenue to various cities and businesses.

Thousands of dollars are spent by Mardi Gras Krewes on beads and throws that all of us will be screaming for in the next few days. In addition, Krewes spend money on costumes, gowns, and catering. And their events bring in tourists who come to enjoy the festivities. And, that in turn, generates more money flowing through our local businesses like restaurants and hotels. It is an economic influx that is much needed, especially this year with the tough economy.

During the next few days, when you attend a parade, ball or party take the time to thank the krewe members for not only bringing Mardi Gras fun and festivities to us, but also, for helping stimulate our local economy.

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to editorials@wlox.com, or post your comments below.
