Singing River Health offers AARP Driver Safety Programs

Pascagoula, (WLOX) - Singing River Health System will co-sponsor two AARP Driver Safety Programs in March to help those 50 and older brush up on their driving skills. The 8-hour programs are designed to help adults stay safe on today's roads, while also teaching them how to reduce traffic violations, crashes and chances for injuries.

On March 4 and 5, Ocean Springs Hospital will host the program from 1 to 5 p.m. Singing River Hospital will host the program on March 9 and 10, from 1 to 5 p.m. The cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members.

Participants will receive an AARP Driver Safety Program certificate.  Class participants will learn about current rules of the road, as well as how to adjust to common age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time.

Participants will learn about:
œMaintaining proper following distance at all times;
œThe safest way to change lanes and make turns at intersections;
œThe effects of medications on driving;
œMinimizing the effect of dangerous blind spots;
œLimiting driver distractions such as eating, smoking and cell phone use;
œProperly using safety belts, air bags and anti-lock brakes;
œMaintaining physical flexibility;
œContinuing to monitor your own and others' driving skills and capabilities.
