BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - If you happened to stop by Ben & Jerry's at the Hard Rock Wednesday afternoon, you may have gotten more than a scoop of ice cream.

Jerry Greenfield of Ben & Jerry's made a stop at the South Mississippi ice cream scoop shop.

"We started in Vermont because we were looking for a place where there was no competition and it was so cold that there was no other ice cream parlors there," said Greenfield.

While many people may know Ben & Jerry's for its Chunky Monkey or Cherry Garcia, company founders say it also wants people to know about its commitment to the environment.

"We decided that we wanted to use our business as more than money. We wanted to be a good neighbor so the company is involved in social issues and a lot of environmental issues," said Greenfield.

The company uses all natural products. It also uses corn based paper products that are bio-degradable.

"When we started years ago, when people were considered environmentalists, they were considered to be nutty or kind of fruitcakes and now it's really mainstream," said Greenfield.

He says today's savvy consumer is more demanding of eco-friendly businesses.
