Harrison County moves forward with jail expansion plans

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Harrison County supervisors on Monday agreed to move ahead with preliminary plans to build an addition at the county jail.

Sheriff Melvin Brisolara wants to build a 500 bed addition at the adult detention center off Seaway Road. The new facility would replace the temporary buildings now being used to house inmates.

"Let us sit down and get some preliminaries done here. Then after we get that, get an idea of some costs and we'll be able to sit down and look at ways. It will be able to generate some revenues," Sheriff Melvin Brisolara, Harrison County said to the supervisors.

Board members heard from a Louisiana based architectural firm that specializes in detention facilities.

"Basically these are metal building frames with block walls. So, we're not going to go in there and pour concrete. It's a reasonable type construction. Stained concrete floors and metal panels underneath the metal frame for security reasons," explained Jimmy Hebert with Grace & Hebert Architects.

The board agreed to let the sheriff and county administrator begin negotiations with the architect.

Supervisors took no action on how the new jail addition will be financed. They mentioned a bond issue as a possible funding source.
