GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Hurricane Katrina destroyed homes and buildings, took lives and damaged so many of South Mississippi's trees.

"An estimated 1.3 million trees were lost in the six coastal counties," said Judy Steckler with Land Trust for the Mississippi Coastal Plain.

The organization is sponsoring tree giveaways in an effort to replant South Mississippi. Thousands of trees are being handed out in the six southern counties. The next tree giveaway is in Gulfport.

Nine varieties of trees and two different native bushes will be handed out for Gulfport residents to use in the replanting campaign.

Residents need to sign up at Gulfport High School, Saturday, January 24th from 12:00-3:00 PM. Trees can be picked up Saturday, January 31st. Call (228) 435-9191 for more information.
