Petal High band raises money for DC trip

PETAL, MS (WLOX) - The Petal High School marching band will represent Mississippi in the inaugural parade. At Tuesday's school board meeting, it was announced that the band had met its fundraising goal, and now has the $68,000 needed to pay for transportation and lodging for the 165-member group.

Mike Garnand, director of bands, said fundraising for the trip was a learning experience. Garnand says the band members were surprised by the amount of community support for their efforts.

"The community support that Petal's given us, the citizens, the businesses, have all come out to show their support for the Petal Band, and it just makes me feel real good about being the director here," Garnand said.

The band is scheduled to leave for Washington, D.C. Sunday morning at 7am.
