GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Pre-Katrina prices for rent are a thing of the past. Renters in South Mississippi are scrambling to find apartments they can afford.

Several upscale apartment complexes have opened and they're finding that the price of rent is beyond many people's budgets. The Columns in Gulfport offers resort style living and luxurious amenities, yet only 40 percent of their 426 units are currently being leased.

Seth Greenberg developed The Columns on the old Racquet Club property in Gulfport.

"We were exceeding expectations when we opened in May, but now the economy is causing a lot of uncertainty," Greenberg said.

Greenberg is with the ECI Group in Atlanta. The company poured millions of dollars into the high end apartment complex.

"It's like a resort, like being on vacation every day," Greenberg said.

The Columns is offering a variety of specials in an effort to attract residents.

"It's a new year and hopefully things will pick up," Greenberg said.
