GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - A Gautier fisherman was sentenced Friday for obtaining disaster crabbing benefits from the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources following Hurricane Katrina.
Timothy Rice must pay $13,440 in restitution, perform 60 hours of community service, and will spend the next five years on probation.
The Mississippi DMR's Katrina Recovery program was intended for commercial fishermen who held licenses before Katrina. Program participants were paid $160 per day for each day of fishing and reporting bycatch and harvest data.
Rice pleaded guilty to the charge of wire fraud back in June.
