Rare Photographs Reveal Civil War Story

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - The Ohr O'Keefe Museum of Art in Biloxi is set to open an exhibition of a photographic history of Ship Island's African American Native Guard.

The second regiment of the Louisiana Native Guard fought for the union army and served on Ship Island during the Civil War. Back then, black soldiers guarded white confederate prisoners on the island.

Ike Edwards, a New Orleans native, has researched the Native Guard and thinks if the story was known, it could attract tourists to Ship Island.

"If you let people know what happened at Ship Island, think about how many people would come here" says Edwards.

The Native Guard Exhibit opens on January 9th at the Ohr O'Keefe Museum and runs through February 20th. Click here to learn more about the exhibit.
