New stamp features Biloxi's lighthouse

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - The Biloxi lighthouse is about to shine again, this time in the national spotlight. The popular attraction will be featured on a 2009 postage stamp that's expected to make its debut sometime this summer.

The 1848 landmark is one of five Gulf Coast lighthouses that will be part of a series of stamps. The lighthouses were chosen because they've weathered so many powerful storms, including Hurricane Katrina.

"It's what you call an enduring landmark, an icon for Biloxi and for the Gulf Coast. And what's so important about this lighthouse is despite all the storms that we've had, in 1915, 1947, 1969, Camille and Katrina, people could always see that the lighthouse has persevered through all of it. So it's a constant in our lives," City of Biloxi Spokesman Vincent Creel said.

The Biloxi lighthouse also graces the cover of the State Tax Commission's annual report, and was recently featured on license plates for Mississippi.
