SCORE volunteers say small business must remember to market

OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) -  The Gulf Coast chapter of a national organization helping small businesses says it's hearing a common complaint in the business community these days.  Service Corps of Retired Executives or 'SCORE' is a group of retired business people who mentor new and existing businesses.

The volunteers say they have some advice for businesses struggling in South Mississippi during these tough economic times.

"The top concern that I'm hearing is, business just isn't there like it used to be," said Dave Philo of SCORE. "One of the things I keep trying to bring up to people is, in our marketing seminar we talk about when you're in a downturn. That's the time when you need to step up your marketing, re-evaluate what it is you are doing. Determine for sure who your customers are. Where are they? What are their likes and dislikes, and how can you use that to reach them?"

Philo said, "And in the crush of day to day business I think small business people a lot of times don't pay enough attention to that aspect of the business."

SCORE also puts on workshops and volunteers will go and work side by side with owners, if needed. For more information call 228-875-0691.
