On the move to end Alzheimer's

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - A man who's walking from Kansas to Florida was in south Mississippi Wednesday. 28-year-old Gary Helminski is pounding the pavement to raise awareness about Alzheimer's disease.

His 1,100 mile trek started November 14th in Witchita, Kansas. Three weeks later, Helminski was enjoying the beach views along Highway 90 in Gulfport and Biloxi. He says there's no better way to see the country, than by walking for a cause close to his heart.

"My grandfather has Alzheimer's right now, and he was definitely one of my heroes in life. And my other grandmother had it, and I'm not there to help take care of them, so this is my way of saying thank you for being there for me," says Helminski.

He hopes to finish in Jacksonville, Florida, December 18th. If you'd like to support his cause, you can donate through the Alzheimer's Association by visiting Helminski's site, strongmindmemorywalk.com.
