Coast Guard rescues 5 boaters

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Five people are lucky to alive after their 21 foot boat sank on the southern side of Ship Island on Sunday.

The Coast Guard says the boat became submerged in water during rough seas, causing it to sink.

As the boat began to take on water in four to six foot seas, one person managed to make a phone call from his cell phone, just before a wave knocked the phone out his hand. The boater called his father, who notified authorities.

DMR, the Gulfport Fire Department along with a Coast Guard boat and helicopter located the men after a short search.

None of the boaters suffered serious injuries, but the Coast Guard says the men were in mild hypothermic states.
