Staying safe during the holiday season

PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) - Most people associate the holidays with happiness, but there is a dark side to the the season. Every year around this time, crime increases nationwide. That's why the Pascagoula Police Department is hosting information sessions on holiday safety tips.

Most of the crimes committed during the holidays can be prevented, if citizens remember to use caution.

The department is encouraging people to:

  • be aware of their surroundings
  • hold on to purses and wallets
  • pay attention to small children.

"This is the time of year where everybody is just caught up in the life of what's going on. Just the holidays, the spirit of the holidays, and they don't think about the safety part. You're having a good time, you're off, and those are good things," Sgt. Ronnie Castille said. "When you become lax, then you start to forget these things, and it very much leaves you open to being a victim of a crime. And people prey on (that) this time of the year."

The next and last session will be held at the Pascagoula Police Department, Saturday, December 6th at 9am. The session is free and the public is encouraged to attend.
