Pass Christian Arboretum open

PASS CHRISTIAN, MS (WLOX) - Nature lovers gathered in Pass Christian Saturday to re-open a favorite environmental preserve and walking trails.

The "William Bartram Arboretum" is located at Menge Avenue and Jones Road. It was badly damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Thanks to the ongoing efforts of volunteers and boy scouts, it was re-dedicated Saturday afternoon.

Members of the Pass Christian Garden Club and several other environmental groups met for an informal ceremony, then took a walk down the trails.

Mary Jo Jones, with Pass Christian Garden Club said, "This is the William Bartram Arboretum, and they've worked tirelessly to restore it since the storm. Renee Brooks and her husband have worked so hard with the signage and the Boy Scouts with the clearing of the trails."

Pass Christian Resident Meggan Brooks said, "Gardens, beauty and fresh air, these are things to love and care. Let's plant a seed or tree. Do it for you, and do it for me."

The garden club has future plans to extend the walking trails. Again, the nature preserve is located in Pass Christian at the corner of Menge Avenue and Jones Road.
