14 arrested, 3 sought in prescription forgery

PICAYUNE, MS (AP) - Authorities now have arrested 14 people and are searching for three others in an illegal prescription drug ring in parts of southern Mississippi and Louisiana. Seven of the arrests have been made in the past several days.

Picayune police Detective Mike Odom says one of the people charged last week, 23-year-old Rachel Whitfield of Slidell, La., stole a prescription pad from a doctor's office in Slidell, where she worked until being fired.

Whitfield is charged with 216 counts of fraud, acquisition of a controlled substance, prescription forgery and conspiracy to possess a controlled substance. Bond was set at $1 million.

The others arrested or being sought are from Mississippi and Louisiana.
