Biloxi boat slip rentals could increase

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Boat owners in Biloxi may soon end up paying more to rent slips.

Council members voted to table the measure, but not without hearing from some boat owners first.

Some Biloxi charter boat owners want city leaders to think twice about increasing boat slip rentals.

The Mayor wants to increase rental rates for the Small Craft Harbor and the Point Cadet Marina, but some charter boat owners say not so fast.

"I don't have any power. I've spent thousands of dollars on fuel just to maintain my boat just to run a generator," said one boat owner.

The increase in rates could be as much as 25%. But after three years with no water or electricity, charter boat owners say the measure wouldn't be fair.

Ward one councilman George Lawrence agrees.

"Any increase is going to affect them. It's going to affect the charter boats. It effects the shrimping industry. It effects all that and I think we need to get back on our feet first and take a serious look and see what we need to do," Lawrence said.

Council members say they will re-address the issue at the next council meeting.
