JACKSON, MS (AP) - A former jailer convicted in federal court for his role in the death of a Harrison County prisoner has lost his appeal. A three-judge panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans on Thursday upheld the two concurrent life sentences handed Ryan Michael Teel last year for his role in the beating death of Jessie Lee Williams Jr. and attacks on other inmates.
Ryan was the only jailer convicted in the case. Nine former deputies pleaded guilty. Teel also was sentenced to 20 years for trying to cover up the attack by destroying records.
Williams died of head injuries after being beaten at the jail on Feb. 4, 2006. The 5th Circuit panel said the evidence against Teel was overwhelming.
