HARRISON COUNTY (WLOX)-- Progress on a new connector road is a little farther along. On Tuesday MDOT opened a section of the new Highway 67 now under construction in Harrison County. In the meantime there is much anticipation.
Right now for a driver whose Point A is Highway 49 in Saucier and Point B is Interstate 110 in D'Iberville, there is no one road that will take you where you want to go. That's why some people say they can't wait to cruise the entire length of the new Highway 67.
Joe Landrum of Harrison County said "I think it would be great because it's going to save me a lot of time."
Crews still need to do everything from installing guard rails to striping get this seven mile stretch of roadway ready for drivers. MDOT divided construction of the new Highway 67 in two parts. The northern half is already complete and open to traffic. The focus is on last section needed to create a shortcut from Saucier to the eastern section of Harrison County.
MDOT District Engineer Kelly Castleberry said "A lot of people are trying to get to the gaming areas down here to work and the Jackson County area. This just provides more of a cutoff or straight shot from 49 to get to these areas."
On Tuesday MDOT opened the southbound lanes of the new 67 from Highway 15 to Interstate 110 at Sangani Blvd.
"At the end of next week or possibly the next week depending on weather we'll have that northbound lane all the way open to 15," said Castleberry.
