The Baha'i faith considers itself the world's newest religion.
Followers believe that their founder, Bahaullah, is the most recent in a line of messengers from God, preceded by Abraham, Krishna, Zoroaster, Moses, Buddha, Jesus and Muhammad. Baha'i is a monotheistic religion whose believers worship the same God as do Christians, Muslims and Jews. Bahaullah taught that humanity is a single race, ready to be united into a single society spanning the globe.
Bahaullah was born on Oct. 12, 1817 in Persia -- modern-day Iran. He was born into a wealthy family, but embraced the cause of the poor. He was imprisoned, tortured and eventually banished to Baghdad. It was there that he declared himself a messenger from God, establishing the Baha'i religion. He died in 1892 and is buried near Acre, in the Galilee region of Israel.
