Vancleave Man Wanted For String of Burglaries

VANCLEAVE, MS (WLOX) - A month-long investigation by the Jackson County Sheriff's Department is nearing an end.

"Several months ago, we started receiving a lot of reports on home burglaries and car burglaries on the west side of the county - Latimer, Vancleave, St. Martin. It started pretty much a rash of home burglaries," said Lieutenant Ken McClenic.

The investigation is almost closed. Only one piece of the puzzle is left, and that's Joe Brewer.  He's accused of burglary and drug use, and he's currently on probation, which means he could face years in prison once he's arrested.

"He appears to be desperate to elude capture, and he's very much strung out, per se, on methamphetamines. And he wants to keep using methamphetamines," said Lieutenant McClenic.

His family is ready for him to stop running.

"We consider him dangerous to himself with the drugs and you know running from the cops. He's gonna get hurt," said his brother, Thimus Brewer. "That's just our concern and nothing more."

Thimus Brewer was outspoken in his belief that his brother is not a danger to the community. But that's not a viewpoint shared by the Sheriff's Department. They consider Joe Brewer armed and dangerous.

"Most of the homes [that he is accused of breaking into] were when no one was at home, but you never know when someone's gonna be at home," McClenic warned. "And right now he's on the run and he's desperate."

Though rumors circulated throughout the weekend that he planed to turn himself in, his family doesn't believe he will.

"He's gonna run until he's tasered down or shot, you know, or a K-9 gets him," said Thimus Brewer.

There could be a reward of up to $1,000 for anyone with information leading to Brewer's arrest. If you have information that could help investigators, call Crime Stoppers at 228-875-6963.
