MEMA: Recent Flooding Victims May Get Replacement Cottages

JACKSON, MS (WLOX) - New cottages could be on the way to 200 families whose cottages were flooded or damaged by hurricanes Gustav and Ike.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency told WLOX News on Monday that it is working to get replacement cottages for those left unlivable by the recent storms.

Replacement cottages would only go in permanent locations like commercial trailer parks. And residents would have to pay the monthly lot rent at commercial parks as well.

Though the temporary cottages were allowed in flood zones, any replacement cottage would not be allowed in a flood zone unless it was elevated or the city or county has okayed the cottage for permanent placement.

MEMA's Assistant Director Lea Stokes told WLOX News that insurance adjustors are still inspecting damaged cottages this week to get a final count on how many were damaged.
