Moss Point Officers Reinstated After Suspension

Two Moss Point officers can go back on the force after they were suspended without pay during a manslaughter investigation.

Patrolmen Derrick Welton and Chris Weeks were accused in the 1999 death of inmate Marcus Malone. District Attorney Keith Miller dropped manslaughter charges against the pair after the acquittal of reserve officer Steve Strickler, who was also charged in the death.

Mayor Frank Lynn broke a tied vote Tuesday to reinstate the officers and issue them back pay for the time they missed.

Weeks and Welton still face a $100 million wrongful death suit brought by Malone's family. The suit also names the two other officers present the night of Malone's death, the Moss Point Police Department, then Police Chief John "Butch'' Gager and former Mayor Louis Jackson.
