3rd District Candidates' Parents Improving

Clifford Shows, the father of Democratic U.S. Rep. Ronnie Shows, was released from a hospital Friday, a week after undergoing surgery to patch an artery in one of his lungs.

Clifford Shows, 77, of Moselle, was in the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery Veterans Administration Medical Center for about two weeks. He also suffered a heart attack while hospitalized, relatives said.

Margaret Ann Pickering, the mother of Republican U.S. Rep. Chip Pickering, remains hospitalized but has been moved out of intensive care, said a spokesman for her son. Margaret Ann Pickering, 63, underwent quadruple bypass surgery Wednesday at an undisclosed hospital in Mississippi. She suffered a heart attack at the family's Jones County home last weekend. She is expected to remain hospitalized until next week.

Chip Pickering and Ronnie Shows are competing in Mississippi's new 3rd Congressional District. The two junior members of the state's Washington delegation were thrown together after sluggish population growth cost the state one of its five House seats.

The candidates are scheduled to debate Saturday afternoon in Richland.
