Gustav Heroes We Salute You

Each week here at WLOX we spotlight an individual or group that we consider to be a hero. This week we want to salute each one of you. During Hurricane Gustav, South Mississippians listened to our communities emergency managers. There was an orderly evacuation of low lying areas, FEMA trailers, mobile homes and Mississippi Cottages.

Yes there were anxious moments for all of us during the past week as Gustav traveled across the Gulf, however, we did not detect panic among our leaders or the general public. Everyone seemed aware of the potential dangers of the storm and had their hurricane plan ready to put into action as the storm approached.

We also want to salute all of our law enforcement, firemen, ambulance personnel, emergency workers, and local leaders who helped to take care of any emergency that came up during the storm. We are thankful to everyone who played a role in helping and keeping our community safe.

Some of our neighbors and friends did suffer serious damage from rising water. In the coming days please in your own way help these individuals as they struggle to recover from the high water and strong winds of Gustav. Our hats off to all of you who showed once again that South Mississippi is a community that pulls together in times of crisis.

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to, or post your comments below.
