Coast Doctor Sues Insurance Carrier For Dropping Coverage

A Gulf Coast doctor filed a lawsuit Tuesday accusing his former insurance company of negligence because the carrier dropped the doctor's insurance coverage.

Harry Danielson, a Pass Christian neurosurgeon, filed a suit against St. Paul Insurance Company and its agent, Biloxi-based The Insurance Center, alleging "willful and wanton'' negligence.

According to the suit, which was filed in Harrison County Chancery Court, St. Paul dropped Danielson's coverage, including "tail'' coverage that he already paid for. Tail coverage is coverage a doctor would get after normal coverage ends because of policy changes or retirement.

Officials at St. Paul could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

The suit seeks the reinstatement of Danielson's coverage and tail insurance and unspecified punitive damages. The suit also asks the court to establish a trust for the some 40,000 doctors nationally who paid "tail'' insurance and have since lost coverage, according to Paul S. Minor, Danielson's attorney.
