The City of Pass Christian will spend nearly a million dollars to renovate what was once the city's only black school, and it won't cost taxpayers any extra money.
The city will use grant money and the recovery money it got from Hurricane Georges and the remnants of Tropical Storm Allison to fix up several areas of the Randolph Multi-Purpose Center.
The building now houses a senior citizens center, the Boys and Girls Club and other civic groups. Repairs will be made to the gym floor, the bathrooms and a new roof will go on.
"It would literally cost us millions of dollars to purchase the land to build the facilities and with these funds we have again, almost 9-hundred thousand dollars I think we can do a substantial amount of work," Mayor Billy McDonald said.
