Jury Selected For Jackson County Murder Trial

A jury was selected Monday in Simpson County for an Ocean Springs capital murder case. Lawyers for suspect Michael Manix wanted a jury outside of Jackson County to hear the case because of publicity. Testimony is scheduled to begin Tuesday in Circuit Judge James Backstrom's courtroom.

Manix is charged with capital murder in the May 17, 1998 stabbing death of 27-year-old Heather Hampton, who was killed while working at a motel in Ocean Springs. Manix has been jailed without bond since his arrest shortly after the murder.

George Shaddock, one of Manix's lawyers, asked Circuit Judge James Backstrom to dismiss the case because it violated his client's right to a speedy trial, but the judge denied the request last week.

Police also charged Michael Janes and Elia Check, both 18 at the time, with capital murder. Manix's former girlfriend, Anita Webb, was charged with accessory to murder and two years later pleaded guilty to the charge. She is awaiting sentencing.
