Long Beach Celebrates 103rd Birthday

LONG BEACH, MS (WLOX) - People in Long Beach are already looking forward to next years Long Beach Anniversary and Festival Celebration. That's after quite a successful event Saturday.

More than 10-thousand people showed up to celebrate Long Beach's 103 birthday. And there was plenty to do and plenty to see.

From bull riding and games for the kids to delicious festival food and over 100 craft vendors, this first ever Long Beach Celebration was a success.

Mayor Billie Skellie, Congressman Gene Taylor, Senator Roger Wicker, Captain Jeff Borowy, Captain Ed Brown and several other dignitaries turned out for the festivities.

Organizers say it was long overdue to celebrate the success of the city.

"Our community had been struck really hard by Katrina, and we've had a lot of struggles trying to get back up. And I just said we need to just get our people together and just celebrate," said Zanne Johnson, one of the festival organizers.

Some of the proceeds from Saturday's event will go towards the Long Beach Beautification Project.
