The proposed plans for the sand beach in Harrison County almost sound like something out of a fairy tale. There will be a boardwalk, pavilions, walkways that weave along and through the sand, new beach parking and coverage of the ugly drain pipes.
The 26 miles of sand beach along our coast line in recent years have been used by tourists but it seems to us that locals have mostly abandoned the beach. If the proposed plans go through, we think many locals will return to the beach.
Since Hurricane Katrina left behind broken board walks and uneven concrete, it has been unsafe in many places to attempt a walk. So we applaud the Harrison County Supervisors and the Sand Beach Authority for gathering input from South Mississippians on what improvements they believe the beach needs.
Already a contract is underway to build a new concrete boardwalk along the beach front. This is just the start of many improvements which have been unveiled. We have a beautiful coastline that stretches for miles and miles, and we envision the day when thousands of coast residents are out on the beach enjoying themselves and marveling at this wonderful place we call home.
