Officers Accused Of Assault File Their Own Charges

Three Waveland police officers facing assault charges stemming from a barroom brawl have filed charges against the men they're accused of attacking.

The fight occurred June 29th at the Brass Anchor lounge off U-S 90 in Hancock County. Both sides have different versions of what happened.

Officers Bobby Gavagnie, Elfren Acosta and Ronald Storey were off duty. In affidavits, they claim "an organized mob'' attacked them. The officers say the fight started because one of the lawmen tried to help bouncers get a man to leave. One witness says the bar staff tried to get the officers to leave before the fight.

The officers filed charges against Russell Jordan, Samuel Rush and Doyle Dahl. Officials say the misdemeanor charges will be settled in Justice Court. Police Chief Jimmy Varnell says the officers remain on the job, and an internal investigation is under way.
