Ships May Be Detoured To Port Of Gulfport

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - The southern tip of the Mississippi River remains closed because of an oil spill, and that has longshoremen at the Port of Gulfport on standby. There's an outside chance freighters headed to New Orleans may be rerouted to Gulfport.

Port leaders held meetings Thursday with the Coast Guard and with the immigration service to see what security measures would be necessary to dock additional ships here.

"We've done this before. We will accommodate you. We help all ports and all carriers in distress, whether they're a passenger ship or a cargo ship," Port Director Don Allee said.

Several companies have contacted Allee about bringing their ships here. But so far, he's had to say no, because the Gulfport ship channel isn't deep enough for them to safely sail into the port.
