No Word On Target Store At D'Iberville Groundbreaking

D'IBERVILLE (WLOX) -- Next fall, South Mississippians will have even more choices when comes to retail shops and restaurants.

Tuesday afternoon, city leaders and developers broke ground on D'Iberville's new Promenade shopping plaza. And while, they gave some details on which stores will anchor the new development, leaders still won't say whether a Target store will be a part of the plans.

"We know what some of the stores are going to be because we have been dealing with the developers and CBL and Forum. But we are going to honor our commitment to them and they are going to make those announcements," said City Manager Richard Rose.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, developers gushed over what will be at the Promenade: Dick's Sporting Goods, Marshalls and Best Buy. The center will also include 11 additional anchor stores, a number of restaurants and two major retail stores. But no one would say if one of those stores is Target.

"Let's keep our fingers crossed that it will happen real soon, but what I can tell you is that I don't think anybody is going to be disappointed," said Rose.

Both City Manager Richard Rose and Mayor Rusty Quave are pleased with the city's effort to make D'Iberville the new retail hub of South Mississippi.

"We are in competition with Gulfport, Biloxi, Pascagoula and Ocean Springs, and if we don't get those businesses in here then we will be sitting at the table wishing we had that tax base in our community," said Mayor Quave.

The city is already working on new development near Highway 67 and a new entertainment complex near Old Towne.

The Promenade will be at the northwest corner of I-10 and I-110. The grand opening is scheduled for October of 2009.
