M-DOT Tests Hurricane Evacuation Plan

HATTIESBURG (WLOX) -- The Mississippi Department of Transportation wants to make the next hurricane evacuation as smooth as possible. Tuesday, the department held its first contraflow evacuation drill.

No lanes were actually closed or reversed. The purpose was to time how long it would take to barricade all entrances and exits on Interstate 59.

M-DOT officials say once coast residents are under an hurricane evacuation order, all four lanes of Interstate 59 will be heading north.

The contraflow plan was first implemented during Hurricane Katrina to help evacuate people from New Orleans using Interstates 59 and 55.
