First & Last Inmates Executed Since 1954

Gerald A. Gallego, 26, from California, was executed March 3, 1955.

  • He was sentenced to death for the 1954 murder of Ocean Springs police officer Ernest Beauguez. Beauguez reportedly had stopped Gallego's car but Gallego got the upper-hand, drove the officer to secluded area in the officer's car and shot him in the head.

Leo Edwards, 36, a New Orleans native, was executed June 21, 1989.

  • He was sentenced to death for the 1980 robbery-slaying of Jackson convenience store clerk Linzy Don Dixon. The robbery netted $11. Dixon was gunned down while he was talking on the telephone. Edwards was an escapee from the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola at the time he went on a spree of robberies and killings in central Mississippi.
