Belgium Company Donates Fire Truck To Long Beach

LONG BEACH (WLOX) -- Long Beach just got a little safer thanks to a generous donation. Thursday, Belgium based Arcelor-Mittal Steel donated a $250,000 custom made pumper truck to the city.

Fire officials say the truck will be used as a reserve vehicle, should one of the others in the fleet break down. The fire chief says this is the first time in 30 years he's had the luxury of a backup pumper truck on which firefighters can rely.

Long Beach Fire Chief George Bass said, "The other engines we've had, reserves, have been 15 to 20 years old. And you have to work on them daily just hoping you'll have them in service when the time comes. So this is great to have a first class pumper to be able to call upon when we need it."

Arcelor-Mittal officials say since Katrina, the company has donated $2.5 million toward Long Beach's recovery. The company also plans to give part of the proceeds of two homes it's building to the city.
