Family Fun Center Set To Open In Waveland

WAVELAND (WLOX) -- Waveland will soon see another major sign of recovery when the only movie theater in town reopens.

Construction crews are playing beat the clock, trying to meet next week's deadline. The doors are scheduled to open to the public Tuesday, with a private opening for VIPs Monday.

The former Cinema 3 theater was heavily damaged by Katrina. Now, it has a new look and a new name - The Family Fun Center. When finished it will have three theaters, a game room and a day-care facility called Kids Zone.

"We want to bring affordable day care for just short term, when people want to have an evening out, they want to have dinner. We want to have a mall of entertainment," said Tony Dane, President of Family Entertainment Group.

The theatres are getting a major face lift.

"We're making it better than it ever was with digital sound. We're bringing in first run movies, not after market movies. So it's going to be totally different when you add the other venues on. Gulfport doesn't have what we're going to be bringing to Waveland," Dane said.

"This facility is going to fill so many critical needs for our community," Waveland Mayor Tommy Longo said.

Katrina wiped out most of Waveland's family and youth oriented entertainment, including the skating rink, skate board park and Buccaneer State Park's wave pool.

The youth of the community are especially excited about the return of the theater.

Kiln resident Tiasharia Peel said, "Before Katrina, everybody use to be up here. You know, just come hang out, have something to do."

In just a few short days, that hang-out will be back.

On June 20th, the Family Fun Center is inviting residents to view the movie Rocky V for free. You'll also have a chance to meet the star of the movie, Tommy "The Duke" Morrison, and win some Rocky memorabilia.
