GULFPORT (WLOX) -- The citizens group trying to save the Gulfport Library from demolition won a significant victory Thursday. The permit committee of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History voted unanimously Thursday morning to recommend the library building be granted "landmark status."
Harrison County supervisors have advertised for bids to tear down the storm-damaged building. This decision will halt, or at least delay those demolition plans.
The Department of Archives will now open a 30 day period for public comment on the controversial issue. The final decision may rest with the Department of Archives Board of Trustees, which meets on August 12th.
