Jessie Arbogast: One Year Later

On July 6th, 2001, Jessie Arbogast was attacked by a shark at Langdon Beach in Florida. The bull shark tore off the eight year old's arm. Jessie's uncle was able to wrestle the shark to shore where a park ranger later shot it and retrieved the arm. Doctors reattached it, but Jessie had lost a lot of blood, which affected his brain.

In August 2001, Jessie returned to his home in Ocean Springs to continue the rehabilitation process. Doctors say he is improving, but he still cannot speak.

The attack made national headlines, and sparked a media frenzy about shark attacks. Two people died later in the summer from shark attacks in other parts of the country, but experts say the number of attacks was about the same as any other year.
