Residents Meet With City Leaders Over Water Bills

Gulfport city leaders spent hours Tuesday listening to Orange Grove residents talk about their water bills. Residents who've been outraged by high water bills packed city hall looking for some answers.

For the first time since annexation, nearly 4,000 Orange Grove residents are being charged for their water usage based on meter readings. More than half of those people just got their first bills. And they were higher than the $53 flat rate they used to pay.

Tuesday's city council meeting was more orderly than last week's public hearing that drew a least a thousand angry residents. Because of fire code regulations, Gulfport leaders could only allow 127 people into the council room. And while the room was packed, no one was turned away.
