GULFPORT (WLOX) -- Built in 1908, the Great Southern Golf Club in Gulfport is one of the oldest courses in the United States. And if a potential deal goes through, it could remain a golf course for years to come.
WLOX News has learned that a corporation is interested in buying the Great Southern Golf Club. If approved by shareholders, sources say that same company could hire a well known professional golfer to come in and redesign the entire 18 holes.
Great Southern Golf Club shareholders have agreed not to discuss the possible sale of the property. But WLOX Action Reporter A.J. Giardina did speak with their attorney Bob Galloway, who confirmed that a deal is in the works.
Galloway said a corporation, which he cannot name at this time, will present a proposal to the 170 shareholders within two weeks. The shareholders could then vote to approve or turn down the proposal.
No price tag for the deal has been released.
In a 2005 interview with WLOX News, former Great Southern teaching pro Pro Ken Michie said the golf course has too much history to see it fade away.
"This golf course should be very much protected and looked after. With the history involved, this golf course was established in 1908. Mr. Ross, of course, did his design in the 20s. But the tradition and the history that is behind this golf course, and especially the man who designed the front nine holes, is overwhelming," Michie said.
WLOX News has learned the corporation involved may also be interested in purchasing properties around the Great Southern Golf Club for condos or possibly a hotel.
