Schools Serving Free Meals During Summer

DELISLE (WLOX) -- The delicious aroma of pizza drifted through the cafeteria at Delisle Elementary School Tuesday morning.

"I like pepperoni!" one child exclaimed as she lined-up.

Hungry children eagerly grabbed their plates, ready to dig in.

"I like tator tots, pizza, milk, and ketchup," one girl said.

"I see a lot of the older faces, but also the newer faces," said Food Services Director Saundra Isabelle. "The pre-K kids that are coming in. It's exciting to learn their names and their nutritional habits."

The school's summer feeding program serves children who attend summer school, members of the Boys and Girls Club, and any child in the community who wants a hot, healthy meal. Jennifer Johnson has been bringing her daughters to the school for the last three years.

"The kids love to come," said Jennifer Johnson. "They just finished school three days ago and they can't wait to come back. The kids don't drink milk at home, but they'll drink it here, and we feel good about that."

When asked to pick her favorite dish, eight-year old Gabrielle Johnson replied "Pizza!"

More than 150 children enjoy the free meals at Delisle every year. The school expects an even larger lunch crowd this summer.

"It's because of the economy, and the gas prices," said Isabelle. "There is still a need. It'll be a need five years later, because this is always something for the kids that take away the expense for the parents."

The summer feeding program at Delisle is so popular, the Pass Christian School District added something new to the menu this year. It started serving breakfast.

"Today was our first day and it was successful," said Isabelle. "Oh yes, it's going to be very, very busy. And I'm excited, very excited."

Delisle Elementary will serve breakfast and lunch every weekday through June 27th. Breakfast is available from 7:45 AM - 8:45 AM. Lunch is served between 11 AM - 12:45 PM.
