PRCC Recieves $1 Million For New Chapel

Christmas came early for Pearl River Community College in Poplarville Wednesday. The school received a million dollar donation from a Hattiesburg businessman and alumnus of PRCC.

The money was donated by Hattiesburg real estate developer Sidney Malone, and will be used to build a chapel on campus.

"One of the things I've learned from my mother and father and my brothers, you never count money. You work hard and at the end of the day never make a big deal about money," said Malone.

It was an emotion ceremony as school leaders thanked Malone for his generosity and years of service to Pearl River Community College.

"I have to be honest with you Sid, I'm a little overwhelmed. The difference this gift will make beyond our life times can't be measured," said PRCC President William Lewis.

Sidney Malone graduated from PRCC in 1964. He said he made the donation because he loves Pearl River Community College and loves his son Kelly who died at the young age of sixteen. This project will be a lasting tribute to Kelly's memory.

"We were talking about this being the perfect project for him to do in the memory of his son. He said, 'I have two sons, Michael and Kelly. When I'm gone Michael will get everything and Kelly is going to get nothing,' so this is what he's giving Kelly. A great memorial to Kelly," said Donna Wilson Lee with PRCC.

The 3,500 to 4,000 square foot chapel will seat 125 to 150 people. Plans will include a bell tower, chimes, and stained glass windows. School leaders hope to break ground in October during the college's homecoming celebration.
